Back To London/Expo!

The time has finally come!

I'll be going back to London in the morning. I have a couple of things I need to do before then. I want to write the third draft of my screen assignment tonight so I at least have that done for Tuesday when it's due. Then I have to pack and do any other things that have to be done, like cleaning up. I hope I'll be able to get to sleep early. I won't be able to make any more posts until Tuesday because I'm not taking my computer. There won't be any point because it's an extra bag to carry but I won't have much time to use it.

So I have to get up at about 4 in the morning and get on the coach around 6:30. Then it's six hours until I get off at London. There won't be much time to rest because I have to go to the shopping centre and buy the last bits I need for my cosplay shoes as well as my snacks for expo. When I get home I'll be finishing making my shoes, which I will hopefully be able to do before bed time. My friend is sleeping over like she usually does before expo but she won't be able to get to my house until about 9 or 10. Hopefully at some point I'll fit in a shower.

Then Friday, we get into costume and get to the hotel, hang around with friends until we can check in, ditch our stuff in the room and go line up. Of course by this time the line should have already started moving (check in time is around the same time as opening time). I don't think we have much planned for this day so it will probably just be walking around with friends as usual.

Saturday we're having the photoshoot for our Kingdom Hearts group. Hopefully that will go well. Then in the evening we're going to Chinatown for dinner. I literally have no spending money for this other than what I already had to pay for snacks and oyster card but the friend who invited me said she'd pay for me and that I don't have to pay her back. I love her.

Again, I don't think we really have anything planned for Sunday so it will be more fun random happenings.

On Monday I think I will have to leave early because I have to get back to my house, get some stuff and then get to the coach station for about 4pm. I don't like having to leave so early but I have class (and a deadline) the next day.

New Plan for NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo begins in a little over a week and thanks to my trip to London, work on an assignment due a week from now and inability to do anything over expo, I have no plan. I like to have a plan for longer stories, especially when there's a time limit. That is why I've decided to go to my back up plan of writing a series of shorter fanfics. It may not be the ideal choice, I had been looking forward to writing a novel this much, but it is still good and at least I can still win NaNo this way. If next year is the same then I may not be able to do an actual novel during November until I leave uni, it seems there's always a lot to do during the month and this year there is a lot more than last year and it is much more important to my degree, so I'm sure no one can blame me for not wanting to put my focus on something else.

On another writing note, a teacher posted this on our class facebook page. Look who I got! Accurate or not, I consider this a great accomplishment.

How the Modern World Killed Libraries

I want to tell you a story, a story that holds a very important message for me. Sometimes, things bother you, but you don’t feel the need to write about it, even when it relates to the most important thing in your life. That is, you don’t feel the need until something inspires you to write about it. As an optimist (or someone who attempts to be one) I suppose it makes sense that this inspiration comes from more positive sources. In this case, it began today when I went to the LRC – Learning Resources Centre, it’s a fancy term for library in colleges and universities throughout England, and maybe internationally, I don’t know – to borrow some books for an assignment I have to write.

Now, let’s turn the clock back several years. To many people, nineteen doesn’t sound like an age to be considered old, but two decades is enough to gain understanding of the way in which the world changes. There’s a word I have come to dislike – renovation. I dislike it because it took away my childhood. When I heard it, it should have been a hint. I grew up in London and still live there when I’m not at university. Around the corner from where I live is a park, Tabard Park to be precise. As a child it was a wonderful place, but they turned it into something horrible. I don’t know what half the stuff they put in there is, only that I’d rather have it back the way it was. And who removes two thirds of the swings when everyone knows that’s the most popular part? Do they want to start fights? But this isn’t about that. This is about a bigger part of my childhood.

Perhaps it was innate to my being or perhaps it was escapism from the real world that was so necessary in a place filled with bullies. You can call me a loser, loner, nerd, whatever they term people like me as now, but ever since I was an infant, it was always books. Reading and writing have been at the top of my hobbies list since before I was able to do either. I would memorise the words in stories my parents read me so I could recall them to myself before the letters were given meaning in my mind. Before my pen could produce more than scribbles I was giving life to characters in my head. This is essentially my entire life, although now new hobbies have come in as well, these two will always hold special significance.

It’s natural for one such as myself that the centre of this obsession would be the local library, after all the books in my collection were read and before I could afford more, what better option was there? John Harvard Library was my local one, and I remember well the way it was. I know in my head and heart the way libraries are supposed to be. My local was of course one of the main influences of this image (though I’m sure the one from Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ got in there too, what book lover wouldn’t want to be Belle in that situation?). Brown isn’t the colour I would usually use for decoration (it would be both horrible and hilarious as the primary colour in a bathroom) but in libraries it is perfect, perhaps because it is the colour we most associate with tree trunks, the source of our books. White and red make good secondary colours in this scheme. The library air is unique, thicker than the outside air, one may get the impression they’d suffocate if they spent too long in there, of course with a good selection they should never want to leave. It is warm. The smell of paper should be prominent. I am one of those people who must sniff every book I obtain before I begin to read. It is strongest in the middle and paperbacks smell better.

These were all features of my local library. They had a massive section of children’s books, though I only spent a few years in there, beginning to read ‘grown up’ books while I was still in primary school. They had a big section for everything, even my favourites: graphic novels, sci-fi, fantasy and horror. They had a bigger horror section than most book shops I’ve been in and that is my number one genre. I would be bringing home piles of books every other week.

Then it happened: renovation. I forgot the previous time it seems because I was convinced the library would become better, and even have a bigger selection of books. Silly child, libraries don’t work like that anymore.

I was so excited the day it reopened. It looked great from the outside. I disliked it as soon as I stepped in. Everything was white. Nothing man-made should ever be all white. It is cold and sterile and inhuman. The air was just like that outside and the smell was not of paper. The counter was replaced by a small help desk, self-service machines its place. I hated self-service machines when they first came out. I love them now but it is still the only part I can accept, and I missed the old ways. I miss watching the stamp and the other item they used, I don’t know what it was called, but I missed the sound.

You know what took up half of the library, don’t you? It was a coffee shop. As if there wasn’t a Starbucks and a Costa and whatever else outside. Do you know what it means for half the library to be taken up by a coffee shop? That’s right, half the books. Every section reduced, some brilliant books removed, many of my favourites gone. I love coffee. Coffee smells good. Coffee tastes good. Coffee is the perfect partner for reading and writing. Coffee does not belong in a library. It isn’t so bad in book shops, but only because they are still so big that it doesn’t impair the function of the shop by reducing half its stock. Even then, it is usually only in big chain book stores like Waterstones. I love Waterstones, but there’s something about those little book stores you find on street corners that is a completely different kind of special. Of course, everything’s Amazon now isn’t it? It’s cheaper and you don’t even have to leave the house. What an age we live in. Everything can be done without having to communicate with people.

Back to the topic, no, I don’t believe that is what makes a library. I haven’t been back in a few years. There was no point; there was almost nothing I wanted to read. Maybe they’ve had some new stock since then. Maybe I’ll take a look at some point.

So we come back to the present, and I mentioned at the beginning of this post that I went to the library at my university today. They don’t have a coffee shop. They have the colours, and smells, and air I remembered. I walked in and it was so hot I felt instantly dehydrated, my legs were weak. That shouldn’t sound like a good thing but as I looked through the shelves upon shelves of books, which they have three floors of by the way, I was reminded of the way my old library used to be, of the way libraries should be. Of course, being an educational place, it wasn’t separated in genres such as ‘horror’ or ‘fantasy’ though I did manage to find a bit of both, but that’s really beside the point. This is the way libraries should be, this is what gave me hope again. I fear that soon too many will be like the one I used to go to. There’s a lot of modern architecture and interior design I hate to be honest, more things need to look the way they did in the previous centuries. I know there’s the whole thing about how mankind and society needs to evolve and move on but seriously? They redid my old school recently too and the result was pretty much the same. If everything’s going to end up that way can someone hurry up and build me a time machine please?

I may be called a hypocrite because I love my technology. I love my laptop, my video games, my music, but there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed. Like technology wise, I’m not a fan of everything being downloadable. I hate it. I want my music in CDs (yes I have an iPod but still, everything on it is from discs), my films on DVDs (though I do have fond memories of VHS) and my books in books, not on a screen. Yes, there are some great stories online that aren’t available in paper copies, but those that are should be kept there. I know that’s not quite keeping with the library topic of this post but I thought it was a relevant note to add.

So I want to know what other people think of this. I know I see some things differently from ‘normal people’ by I can’t be the only one who sees these modern libraries as atrocities. It completely changes the experience of reading and I don’t think it does so for the better, and of course experience is key to inspiration.

I Made a Sandal! - Cosplay Update

It is 10 days before Expo. Nearly a week.
Let's see how far I've come:

Deidara
  • All clothes sorted, if slightly inaccurate. But I don't plan to take my coat off so that's fine.
  • It's been 3 weeks since I ordered my wig and it hasn't even been sent yet. I've accepted I won't have it in time and as I'm low on money have decided to do it with my own hair without dying it (I really don't want to dye it). Again, inaccurate, but better than nothing.
  • Still need to make the shoes and figure out how to do my hands.
  • Bought some weapons from Tokyo Toys.

Zexion
  • A friend has said I may be able to borrow his book.
  • Still need to find some cheap black boots somewhere.

Jushiro
  • All clothes sorted. Wig has arrived and is perfect.
  • Started making my sandals. The firt came out good but not great. I know what went wrong though and I think I can fix it without taking the whole thing apart. The second will be done the Thursday before expo. I'm sure I'll have them done in time.

(The sandal so far.)

I did have a plan for NaNoWriMo...

I am still determined to win NaNo this year. A week ago I was trying hard to find a plot. I thought of one that had potential but somehow it turned itself into a sequel to the novel I planned last year. The problem is, I want to write that novel first, but not for NaNo, so that plot is out.

I have just over two weeks to come up with and plan out a new idea. I have a few so I just need to develop one enough to have a novel. I don’t think it will be anything I try to get published, more just to put online and prove to myself that I can still write novel length stories. I may even do a fanfic, I have a few of those planned too.

Planned Cosplays

Yesterday a friend came over so we could work on our cosplays together. We got really excited and started planning future cosplays, since most of ours are done together. We ended up with 2 years worth of coplays planned. They may still change of course, but I'm sure up to next May won't change now. Here are the plans for me so far:

  • Deidara (Naruto)
  • Zexion (Kingdom Hearts)
  • Jushiro (Bleach)

Halloween 2012

  • Jeff the Killer

May 2013

  • Yumichika (Bleach)
  • Ulquiorra (Bleach - Chibi/Release form)
  • Silica (Sword Art Online)

Weekly Update 14/10/12

This week:
  • Spent Thursday to Monday afternoon in London. It felt great to be back. The air really feels different to Liverpool, it feels more like home and that’s probably because it is. It was great seeing my friends and family and cat again and I had a lot of fun.
  • Went out on Friday to get some supplies for zombie day and my sandals. The guys in the rope shop played a mean joke on me but I love the place anyway.
  • Went to Zombie Day. I’ve already done a post about that so I won’t go into detail here.
  • Worked on cosplays. Again, I’ll do a post for that tomorrow.

Next Week:
  • Finish draft of screenwriting assignment and start work on prose assignment.
  • Try to fix first sandal.
  • Plan my NaNoWriMo novel.

World Zombie Day

So yesterday was World Zombie Day, the time of year zombies swarm the treets in search of yummy human flesh. The day where, if real zombies were to arise, no one would even realise until it was too late.

So for anyone reading this who may not know, this is the day that people dress as zombies, for charity! It's actually a pub crawl but I was too poor for the drinking part this year. Luckily, the drink isn't necessary to have fun. So as the name says, it happens all over the world. I was at the one in London.

This was zombie me. Very far from the great looking zombies that were there. I was better than it show in the picture. I had an old t-shirt that was already covered in rips and added some fake blood (it showed off quite a bit of side boob and stomach) and had bloody scratch marks on my skin where the largest rip was. I got a pair of jeans that I don't wear anymore anyway because the zip broke and added some rips and blood. My hoodie got the blood on it just from the way I was touching it after covering my hands in blood. I had a lot of blood on my arms, face and neck. I tried to mess up my hair and use make up to make my skin more pale but both seemed to fail. I also had dark circles around my eye. And someone gave me a plastic thumb!
I will be a much better looking zombie next year. I'm already thinking about ideas.

The day itself was a lot of fun. It started by meeting up with a couple of friends and then going to the meet point for the zombies. A friend and I spent the first hour or so growling at normal people and chasing little children (I did immediately leave the ones that seemed scared, I'm not evil). We also had lots of funny moments with other zombies and zombie hunters.

We then started moving through the city and at one stop met up with some other friends and had a great time standing/sitting around talking and surrounded by zombies. It was also the meet for our KH RP group.

I had to leave earlier than my friends because I had some stuff I had to do at home but it was a really great day. Again, I'm looking forward to next year.

Weekly Update 06/10/12

This week:

  • Received my socks and wig for my Jushiro cosplay. Decided to make my own sandals for it, just waiting for the materials to arrive.
  • Really worried my Deidara wig won’t get here in time because I ordered it a couple of weeks ago and it still hasn’t even been sent yet. I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t get it. Also decided to make my own shoes for this cosplay. Just need to get the stuff for it.
  • Classes and anime society were fun as usual. There are a couple of anime I’ve really liked in the last couple of weeks, one of which I’ve already watched the entire first season of, and I may have more cosplay ideas but I want to watch more first.
  • Had a couple of issues with flatmates but it seems to be resolved now so I’m not going to talk about it on here out of respect.
  • Sorted out the key problem that I kept having. I’m happy because the email implied we had to get our own photos done but they take both for us.
  • Getting excited about NaNoWriMo coming up again.
  • Decided on my need to create some form of schedule.

Next week:

  • Going to London and staying there from Thursday to Monday. Should be fun, aside from the work I have to do while there.
  • May need to talk to reception about how long they can hold a parcel before getting rid of it. My binder is due next week but it sounds like they only hold stuff for three days so if it doesn’t come before I leave I need to talk to them so I won’t be screwed if it comes at the end of the week.
  • A bit worried about having to comment on other people’s work in class. It sounds like we’ll have to read them out loud. I’d be much more comfortable if we could just hand over our written versions.
  • Going to be sad to miss anime society on Thursday night, but I will be happy to see my family and my cat again. My mum said she’d make my favourite dinner.

My NaNo Survival Kit

This is a popular thread on the NaNoWriMo forums, basically a list of the things you'll need for getting through NaNo. Since I want to keep updated here with my progress I thought it would be good to post mine here too.

My laptop and charger
The internet - the following tabs should be on at all times: facebook, youtube or other viewing site, one google tab for research (more if required), another to keep up with emails/uni site/forums/etc, and one for any online thing I'm using to help with writing (at the moment I'm a fan of Written? Kitten!)
Word
My phone and charger
Notebook and pens - for when I'm out or feel the need to write on paper
Paper/pencils/rubber/sharpner - drawing character/settig designs
Folder - to keep plans and such in
Diary
Dressing gown - pretty much wear it constantly while I'm in my room because it's comfy and warm
Motivational poster - Just because
Coffee
Pepsi Max
Snacks
Uni stuff, since I'll be doing that as well, keeping it all together
Books for inspiration

I think that's pretty much all I need.  All the important things anyway.

Pinkie Pie Cupcakes Cosplay Part 2

A couple of weeks ago I was looking through some pictures on my laptop and found the sketches for the Pinkie Pie cosplay I had planned. It occured to me that I never did get around to posing them online despite having an actual post about the cosplay. It was off of my list for a while for reasons I can't quite remember but it's recently been put back on, though I'm not sure when I'll do it, perhaps next Halloween.

I've learnt quite a bit since first planning this so there are changes to my original plans but I'll show the sketches as they were originally drawn:

The Dress

Most of this plan is still the same, assuming I can aquire or make a base dress of my own, simply because it seems easier than just sewing the top fabrics together. I might make the cutie marks out of felt or some other fabric and make them match ones from actual drawings or represent actual ponies from the show.

Wings

Wire may still be needed but I've seen tutorials suggesting other things for the actual base. I'm not sure which I'll use yet. The rest is pretty much the same. I think I still need to find a better way of holding them on. I'll be doing a different cosplay requiring wings before then so I'm sure I'll learn from that. I may even just make them plushie style as it may be lighter and easier to keep together considering I need so many of them.

The Hat

Okay, this wasn't part of the original costume but I thought it would make a nice addition. After reading the cupcakes story again I at least know what colours it needs to be now. I'm still not completely sure how to make it. Likely foam or paper mache or something of the sort.

Other Stuff

I'm not going to try to make hooves anymore, most people who cosplay the ponies don't so neither shall I. Saves some of the work and will be a lot easier. The other bits I'm keeping, I just need to decide how to do them still, I don't think the ideas I have down for either will work. I'll have a real hacksaw by then but I doubt I'd be allowed to carry it around. The tail I'll probably do a plushie type like I mentioned before. And of course I'll have a wig, as well as lots of blood and cupcakes.

That's basically it. I probably won't think too much more on it until I'm ready to do the cosplay, but I thought it would be nice to share since the original post about this cosplay is my second most popular post.

New Red Dwarf Tonight!

Tonight is the night! The first episode of Red Dwarf X is going to be on TV!

I’ve been watching Red Dwarf pretty much for my entire life and it’s always been among the list of my favourite programmes. I’ve been waiting for this series to begin since I found out it was being made around a year ago, maybe more.

I expect it to be awesome as usual, though I will say it’s weird how much the characters look like they’ve aged. I mean, it’s kind of obvious they would have because it’s been a while since the last series and of course the actors have aged, but it’s still a little odd.

Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to watch it while it’s on TV as it’s on at 9 and I won’t be home from anime society until about 9:20. If the plus channel comes on freeview I may have my chance to watch it then if my flatmates don’t have the TV, otherwise I’ll have to hope I can find it online.

3 Weeks to Expo - Cosplay Update

Deidara

Ordered my wig but I'm really worried it isn't going to come in time. Not sure what I'll do if I don't have it by expo, will either have to pass on doing it or dye my hair and use that.
Still looking for suitable trousers.
Still need to figure out how to do my hands.
Need to make my shoes.

Zexion

Still need to buy new boots.
One of my friends has said I can borrow the book from him so at least I'll have a 'weapon' for one of my cosplays.

Jushiro

Wig has arrived. It wasn't made as a character specific one but it's perfect.
Decided to make my own sandals. Ordered the materials and waiting for them to arrive. Going to start making them next week when I'm in London. I have my socks for it now too.

I’ll probably have pictures next week to show the progress I’ve made so far. I’m getting really excited about expo but, as I said, worried I won’t have everything in time. I’m actually looking forward to next year more in a way because I really want to make my own costumes. That’s why the most excitable part with these ones for me at the moment is the sandals, I just hope they turn out right.

NaNoWriMo is Back!

NaNoWriMo begins on the 1st of November and I am determined to win this year. I had to quit last year because I lost a few days on the uni residential and had a lot going on both in and out of uni. I have even more to do this year but I'm going to manage this as well.

I have no idea what I'm going to write for it yet so I'm going to start making plans. I'll be updating here as I develop plans and make progress once November actually arrives. I think I'll actually have quite a bit to talk about.

Doctor Who - Series 7 So Far - My Thoughts

So series 7 finished on Saturday until the Christmas episode which – making an educated guess – will be on around Christmas. I wanted to review a couple of episodes but then I thought I might as well wait until Saturday’s episode so I could do them all together. There will be spoilers in this for anyone who hasn’t seen some of the episodes so if that’s the case just skip the ones you haven’t seen, I’ll be doing it by episode.

First however, a word on the series as a whole. Doctor Who is one of my favourite shows and has been since it started off again in 2005. I’ve seen every episode since then and recently started watching the older series’ as well. I’m only a few episodes into the first so far however, so I’m not counting it in this. In all honesty, the recent series has been my least favourite so far. That isn’t to say it’s not good, it is, just not as good as the previous ones in my opinion. I find that this one for me has lacked some of the intensity that previous episodes have, which I will explain by episode.

1.            Asylum of the Daleks

The first episode of the series was pretty good. I found the beginning entertaining, as it always is when a dalek has to ask the Doctor for help, of course they did think it would bring about his death as well, but that’s beside the point. Amy and Rory’s relationship is something I’ve always alternated between loving and being annoyed by and in this episode it was more of the latter. They did have good moments in the episode though, such as when Rory triggered the broken dalek to go into exterminate mode.
I loved Oswin’s character, she was fun and pretty awesome and I couldn’t help thinking that she would make a great companion and my friends have agreed, so I was excited when I found out the actress that plays her will be coming back as the Doctor’s new companion in the Christmas episode. We wondered if it would be as the same character but apparently not, so I hope the one she’s going to play will be just as cool.
I was genuinely shocked by the ending although watching the episode again there were so many hints that Oswin was actually a dalek, but I couldn’t predict it. I was actually a bit upset by it, especially when it became clear she would have to die, because I really liked her. I was impressed when it turned out she had made all the daleks forget about the Doctor, but I can’t help but feel that that will make any future encounters with them less exciting. I could be wrong of course.

2.            Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

The title itself implies awesomness and that’s what it was. Maybe it’s just me, but I love dinosaurs, and I’ve been hoping for a long time they would do a Doctor Who episode involving them. I also loved the inclusion of Rory’s father in this episode. I didn’t think he would be a lot of use at first but he turned out to be a great addition and I found myself wishing he would be included in more episodes. Although I felt the same about Nefertiti, it’s nice seeing someone from the past be brought to the future for once. My favourite scene in the episode would have to be the triceratops riding scene, though I was upset when it was killed.
I must admit though, I found parts of it rather predictable. Perhaps that was intended as we were told the actual purpose of the ship before we met Solomon, but it was obvious to me who he was and what he was going to do. I also had an idea of what the Doctor was going to do to avoid the missiles, but I was surprised when he allowed Solomon to be destroyed with his ship. I did enjoy that as it isn’t often the Doctor allows people to die, but this guy deserved it.

3.            A Town Called Mercy

I’m not really a fan of Western themes so I wasn’t sure I was actually going to like this episode, but I did.  Although again, I found it rather predictable, realising who Jex was and what he had done quite early on in the episode. Also as with the previous episode, the Doctor shows his dark side again, wanting to hand over Jex to be killed rather than trying to find a way to save him. Again, I was surprised, though I really enjoyed watching and almost hoped that he would be killed. Later however I found myself sympathising with him though I was happy when he killed himself. I did enjoy the war theme and usually enjoy the ‘person being turned into a weapon’ idea. Especially when they decide to seek revenge and I was happy with the ending as things seemed to work out well for the Gunslinger as well.

4.            The Power of Three

Although I liked this episode and found it to be fun, that’s all it really was. I was actually a bit disappointed with this episode. It was good but nothing really happened. These cubes and those controlling them – who I would have liked a bit more backstory on – had a year to prepare, and yet when they finally took action it was over in a matter of seconds. The Doctor stopped and reversed it all without facing any kind of challenge, it was all too easy. I fail to see how after a year of preparation the ship would have no kind of defence against someone trying to stop them.

5.            The Angels Take Manhattan

Following the last couple of episodes I didn’t think this one would be particularly good, especially as they brought back the weeping angels. They were never my favourite enemy and to be honest I couldn’t think how they might use them in a way different from the previous times. I thought it would end up too similar. I was wrong. This was easily the best episode of the series. It was also the only episode so far this series that made me cry. The ending was beautiful and I found it to be the perfect send off for Amy and Rory, this being one of the episodes where I love their relationship and willingness to die for each other. The scene with Amy saying goodbye to the Doctor and River was heart-breaking. I still have no idea how River’s timeline works and this adds to it. I’ve watched videos specifically on this timeline and there’s always a part where I lose it. I’ve decided to stop asking about that though. As always, I loved her character, though it’s a good thing she refused to travel with the Doctor full time. I’m also confused about how they knew Amy would be the one to publish the book but I suppose it does make sense.
