Goodbye 2012!

So here we are - the end of the year. It’s not a big deal really because when the clock rolls over to midnight life will be pretty much the same as it always is with no changes. Well, I say that. There are New Year’s Resolutions and stuff. It does seem like an appropriate time to start over.

How am I celebrating you ask? At home alone with a glass of wine, listening to music (non-holiday related) while giving one of my cosplay weapons a new coat of paint, and waiting for TV to get good again. Sounds amazing right? Soon there will be the addition of comforting my cat while he’s terrified of the fireworks. So, let’s have some end of the year type stuff.

3 Highlights of My Year

A lot of good happened this year. Since I left school each year gets better and better. Here are just three of the things that made this year great (of course, it adds up to more if you count how many times each actually happened):

  • Prose Class – The highlight of second year’s first semester had to be the prose module. The workshop group was just such a fun place to be and it proved to me that you can get constructive criticism from university (unlike a certain event from the beginning of this year). Really though, everyone was great and I don’t think there was a day someone didn’t say something that made me laugh. Our tutor was great too and I’ll miss not having her in any of the next semester’s modules.
  • Fun with Friends – I don’t think I’ve ever had such an eventful social life as I’ve had this year. There are a group of people I’ve been spending time with almost every month and it’s always a highlight of my month. Then there’s been the anime society, which has been amazing as always, and even flatmates that are fun to spend time around now.
  • Expos – The two biggest highlights of my year once again were the MCM Expos. There’s just so much fun and happiness involved, it’s the greatest place in the world! This year was special because I could go for whole weekends and I was able to start making my own stuff for it. Next year’s will be even better, I’m sure of it!

2012 New Year’s Resolutions, Did I Succeed or Fail?

I made a whole list at the beginning of the year, let’s take a look:

1. Write at least one short story a day. X
I just couldn’t pull it off. I did get a few written though so that’s something at least.

2. Get better grades in my uni classes. ü
So far this has gone really well. I’ve only got a couple of grades back from this semester but they have been really good.

3. Be healthier. ü
Okay, so I’m probably still not super healthy but I’ve made some big improvements this year. I’ve had a more balanced diet, and doing other things that are supposed to be good for the body. I admit I haven’t been great at exercising, though I have done a bit on and off. I have lost a little weight which I’m quite happy about.

4. Stick to the budget. ü
I’m counting this even though my budget is messed up at the moment because I did stick to the limits I gave myself and certain problems I have with it currently will soon be solved.

5. Get better at drawing. ü
I wouldn’t say there have been big improvements yet but there have definitely been some so I count it.

6. Finish all the games I currently own. X
Yeah… that was never going to happen. I will get through them all when I have time though.

7. Be more confident in social situations. ü
There have been big improvements here I’d say, especially in university.

5/7 is pretty good I’d say.

Special Mention

My cat Trixie died on the 1st of May, aged 13. I’d had him since I was six and this is going to be my first year without him. Trixie, you were awesome! I will miss you.

So there we have it, time for a new year to begin.
Happy New Year everybody!

Chibi Ulquiorra Cosplay - New Plan

My plans for this cosplay have changed quite a bit. It’s probably a good thing.

So the plan for the bottom part is still the same. I’ll be using a pair of black leggings as a base and then adding black fur to it, as well as my tail. I’m so excited about getting a tail. In addition I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about my feet. I think I’m just going to use long black socks and then make claws to put where my toes are. It’s okay, shoes aren’t necessary at expo. I’ll probably do the same for my arms using long gloves.

As for the top half, well… last time my plan was just to use my binder and bandages. Here are the problems I found with that:
1.       I was worried it would still look like I was trying to do a female version.
2.       I thought it would look too much like the normal version instead of a chibi version.

My friend actually suggested something I think will fix both of these problems and it’s what I’m planning to do now. I’ll be making an Ulquiorra hoodie. This will be good because then I can probably just use the binder instead of bandages too, I should be able to get a bigger one by then so it shouldn’t keep falling down without extras. If it does, I can just wear the hoodie closed instead of open. This will also be helpful if it turns out the day I’m him is cold. My friend’s suggestion was to make the hoodie with the horns and wings attached. I’m a little worried it won’t look as impressive as making them properly as I was originally going to do, but it will certainly be easier and make it look chibi, which it’s supposed to be. Plus I really like the idea of having another hoodie with horns. With wings too, that’s just perfect. I think I’m going to put a ‘4’ on the chest too, even though Ulquiorra’s release form doesn’t seem to have that. Again, chibi version, it doesn’t have to look exactly like the real version, right? I think it will look good.

Then I just need to get a suitable wig, perfect my make-up, and get a load of white body paint.

I’ve actually drawn a picture of Ulquiorra in that form wearing the hoodie I’ve designed… just to see how well the look actually worked. I think it’s adorable. I’ll upload it here as soon as I get access to the scanner.

Silica Cosplay Part 1 - The Plans

I’ve been in a really cosplay obsessed mood lately, which is bad because I can’t afford to buy the things I need until February. So I’ve been using this time to plan out my costumes and I’ve decided to share what those plans are. First up, is Silica from Sword Art Online.

- I did consider using my real hair but it’s a little too dark. Silica’s one of those people where I had a problem figuring out if her hair was meant to be light brown or dark blonde (yeah, my eyes really can’t tell the difference half the time). I had so much trouble finding a suitable wig as well. I couldn’t find anything that seemed to be the right shade or length. Finally I just had to start looking for a character specific wig. I did manage to find a good looking one that isn’t much more expensive than a normal wig, now I just need the money to order it, and to hope they’re still selling them by the time I get it.

- The first layer of clothing should be fairly simple. My plan is to get a plain black t-shirt and black skirt and alter them as needed. That means cutting the shirt to the right shape (because I’m sure I won’t find one already in that shape) and sewing the yellow lines onto them by hand. I’m not sure actually whether hand or machine sewing will be better for that part but if I do it by hand I can do it while I’m still in Liverpool so I don’t have to wait until I get home to do everything. The socks will be done in the same way. For the part with the buckle I’ll be using a cheap little one with some of the fabric I cut off the shirt. The shoes will be done similarly. I’m hoping to find a cheap pair I can just alter to look like hers.

- The outer layer of clothing is a little trickier, for someone who’s never done this before anyway. It shouldn’t be too hard though. Basically I’ll be getting some red and yellow fabric, cutting out the shapes and sewing them together. That will be done with the machine; I’m not even going to try hand sewing with that part. I’m also a little worried about those extra yellow bits, like the crosses. This is why the costume will take longer to make than it has to, I’ll be spending a lot of time just making sure all the shapes are right. Hopefully I’ll have enough material leftover to make the gloves.

- I’ll be making the sheath and belt with fake leather. The weapons I was originally going to make out of wood but considering I don’t even have all the tools I’d need yet I’ve found a cheaper and what looks to be easier way of making them out of foam and paper mache. I’ll be following a tutorial I found online, and from what I’ve seen quite a few people including a couple I know use this method so hopefully it’ll be good. I do still hope to get the things needed to make wooden props at some point, but I need to save money at the moment. Making my own costumes seems to be helping with this too. Aside from the stuff I need to get to make this it will cost £50-60 including shoes and wig. I don’t think I’ve ever done anything for less than £100 (excluding my first costume). I’m not sure whether making the breastplate will work the same way but I’ve been having trouble finding a good way to do that so I might try it.

- I’m still not 100% on how I’ll be doing the anklet and hair accessories yet but I’m sure it won’t be too hard to figure out.

Cat Stole My Bed! (Generic Christmas Post)

Cute cat pics to make up for generic Christmas post!

I am home! Well, to be fair, I’ve been home for over a week now. I came back on the 13th, but I’ve had a fairly lazy week where I’ve done nothing but talk to family, watch TV and play Sims 3. There was the Christmas party last Thursday, Christmas food shopping on I don’t remember what day, and spending hours on Tuesday with one of my best friends. Other than that, laziness. It’s a good thing. I needed a rest after the semester finally finished. That was an exciting time; it felt so good to get all my assignments in.

So now I have 2 weeks left to enjoy what’s left of the Christmas holiday, and I have a few plans. I’m cleaning and reorganizing my room, again. Expo left it a bit messy and the closet exploded from all the crap I stuffed in it. I also need to prep it for the next time I come back when I’ll finally be able to work on my cosplays. Hopefully that means finally getting the sewing machine up here. Perhaps I’ll even be able to start the wall painting finally. Cosplay planning is also going to be happening. I’ve planned everything for Silica over the last couple of days and I’m really excited to finally start. There are a couple of things I’ll still be able to do in Liverpool luckily so I won’t have to wait forever.

I’m also excited to get back to my console games. I can’t believe I’ve been too lazy to even set them up. There are a certain couple I want to go through but in general I’m just excited to be able to play again. I love my handhelds of course but there is a difference. Another thing I have to do is the research for my university Independent Study project. I’m doing a graphic novel so half of it is just reading them. That should be easy enough. Then I should start planning what I’m going to do for it.
There will probably be posts on all of these things.

As for the actual Christmas stuff… well, tomorrow I’m making biscuits following a recipe I got from one of my teachers who brought some in on our last day. They’re delicious and I’ve given up the chance to get a birthday cake in order to have them (we’re having budget Christmas again). Then I get to have my birthday on Monday which will be no different from a normal day because it’s budget Christmas and I’m having my birthday biscuits tomorrow but everyone still has to sing to me. Then Christmas, yay! At least we get a full Christmas dinner and we got a load of fruit and vegetables free thanks to our neighbour and lots of other yummy food. It’ll probably be just stay in and watch all the Christmas TV and listen to the Christmas songs thing as usual. At least I managed to get little trees from the 99p store.

Chibi Ulquiorra Cosplay Part 1 - The Basics

This is the first cosplay I’ve started for May mainly because I realised recently that I already have the basics for it. I’m not exactly using any actual chibi-type image as a reference pic but for the most part I’m going off of the original look, like this:

I’ll start by showing the basics I have for him and talking about how I’m planning to alter them and then go on to what I need.
So here I am:

I don't look anything like him yet, but that will change as the costume progresses.

First of all I’m going to lose more weight by the time I do this properly. I don’t feel like I have to look really skinny or anything but I’d like to have less than I do now. Especially for being someone who looks like that.

The bandages, well, unfortunately I’m a girl who likes to be a boy and boobs don’t help. Boys generally do not have boobs. So I was gonna have to wear something over them anyway. I use a binder to flatten them but it’s a bit small so without the bandages for extra support it keeps coming down. I’m hoping to have a bigger one for May but I think I’ll keep the bandages even if I do. I think they work as a cute addition for a chibi form, a benefit of not doing the actual version.

As for the bottom, I think the leggings work as they’re the right colour and fir to match the picture. The fluffy bits are going to be added to the thighs, I’m going to sew fake fur onto them, and then I’ll be adding a tail.

Now, the things I’ll need:

  • Black fur - as mentioned above
  • Black wig - I have a couple but neither is suitable for this cosplay.
  • White body paint- It’s pretty obvious why I need that.
  • Make up - I already have some in the right colours for him but I’ll have to check after I get the paint that it will go on top of it properly.
  • Arms and feet - I do have an idea of how to do this but it’s a bit difficult to explain the idea in its early stages
  • Wings – I was originally going to make full sized foldable wings but now I’m thinking as a chibi form I can get away with much smaller wings which will be cheaper and make moving around easier at expo. I’m not sure if I’ll use the foldable feature yet. There are a few things I need for this one.
  • The horns – The idea at the moment is paper mache and I’m hoping I’ll be able to make them strong enough that way.

So those are my plans for now. Have I missed anything?
I’m also going to have kitty Grimmjow with me who I’m guessing will get a lot more love.
More updates as they become available, the next will probably be me trying to do the make-up, since I can’t really start the rest until February.

How I Do My Assignments

So I now have just under two 2 weeks left to finish 4 assignments and I’m feeling pretty good about it, particularly as two are basically finished.
This semester has gone by quickly for me and that’s probably a good thing since I have no money and very little food left. Anyway, since the assignment deadlines are getting so close I thought I’d go through the steps of how I complete each of my assignments. It took me a while to figure out in which way I work best (I didn’t have it perfected throughout school and college) but now that I know getting work done is a lot easier.

1.         Knowing what to do

My first step in beginning an assignment is always going over what I have to do again as well as taking note of the assessment criteria. From this I can usually develop a list of things that need to be included in the assignment, as well as how to write it. Another thing I do when I have a number of assignments is to list them in order of closest to furthest due date. That way, the closer ones can be given more attention. Of course, this only works if they’re a couple of weeks or more apart, obviously that technique won’t work for ones that are one day after another.

2.         Use interests

This is a benefit of being a creative writing student. For original writing pieces I decide based on what I like to write obviously, for the presentation on an author I’ve chosen my favourite, for my essay on a film I’ve chosen one of my favourites, and for any other writing piece I’ve chosen stories I like. Of course, there are cases where I need to find new stories as well and in that case I try to find ones that sound interesting. Not only does this make the work more fun, but it usually makes it easier to find things to write about as well.

3.         Method of writing

It can take some extra time writing on paper only to have to copy it onto the computer, but if you’re like me and find it easier to keep writing that way, it’s probably for the best. It’s also best to then recycle the paper when you’re done with it.

4.         Schedule

I hate to say it but it is a lot easier to get work done when you have a schedule. Currently I’m not scheduling in specific times for working on assignments but I am writing down which day I’ll work on which assignments. This is just as effective for me because I tick off each job as I do it and I hate to get to the end of the day with ticks missing. I’ve been using the same method for housework too. Scheduling things like this also makes it easier to space out each job, so I only have a few tasks to do each day.

5.         Plan

This is of course an important part of any piece of work. I like detailed plans usually but this semester I’ve been keeping it simple – bullet point planning for original pieces and short notes for each other assignment.

6.         Cut assignments into smaller pieces

Trying to get everything done at once is long and painful. I’ve found the easiest way to get things done is to split the assignment into smaller parts. For example, my analysis of two short stories is divided like this:
-           Structure
-           Characterisation
-           Description and dialogue
-           Other writing techniques
This is then done for each story. In a later draft, these things will be compared as well.

7.         1st draft

What I’ve learned this semester is not to worry too much about the first draft. I put effort into it of course but I make an effort to keep writing even if there’s a point I’m stuck on. This can make it come out worse than I might like, but this is the best way of getting the whole thing written and means I know what needs to be said, there just needs to be a better way of saying it. The ‘bad’ parts can be fixed in the next draft.

8.         Feedback and following drafts

We only get class feedback on our original pieces. I’ve been lucky this year in that I’ve only been given constructive criticism so far. Not all of this needs to be included in the final piece either of course, aside from the odd mistake it’s purely suggestion (although a certain awesome person did give me a great ending for my story). That’s why I prefer this kind of criticism, if I don’t agree with what someone’s saying usually I can at least see where they’re coming from and if I do agree well that just makes my work better. I like to do new drafts following every feedback session as a result. Then, as with those that do not get class feedback, they get looked at every few days. I’ve been lucky enough to get it so that I only really have to focus on one assignment each day now. I like leaving a few days between new redrafts as well because the time makes it easier to spot things that should be changed. Plus if I have to read them too much they start to bore me and make me hate my work.

So yeah, that’s pretty much it. With the four assignments I have left to finish I’m hoping to hand them in early. Well, I have to with those for the prose module because they’re due on the 17th and I leave on the 13th. It’s good to get the work finished before its due date though because I hate having to rush to get it finished, printed and handed in. Luckily I’ve been avoiding that for the most part so far.

Monthly Update 30/11/12

I’ve decided to start doing these as monthly updates instead of weekly ones just because it will take up less of my blog and mean I only talk about more important things. So let’s get right on with it.

This Month:

  • NaNo – NaNoWriMo was a failure again for me this year due to having too much university work to do. I have vowed that next year, regardless of the amount of work, I will complete it. A big part of it I think is that I didn’t perfect my methods of working until around the end of the month.
  • Screenwriting Results – I got the results back for the first assignment I handed in for my screenwriting module. I got 64%. I didn’t think that sounded like a lot at first but then I remembered you only need 70% to get the top grade, and this was the assignment I felt least confident about, so I’m feeling good about the rest.
  • Reading Log – I completed and gave in the first assignment for my prose module. We basically had to read 10 short stories and write a short paragraph on each. I found it a little tricky because it had to be 2000 words, meaning I could only write 200 on each.
  • Dreams – I have been having some really crazy dreams in the last week. That might not sound relevant but it is to me, just because of how interesting they were. Now there’s been a lot of danger and scary stuff in them too but last nights was the first of recent dreams to actually scare me. It was even done in the style of a horror video game. I think I need to cut down. I really hope this continues though.
  • Presentation – I had to give a presentation on Wednesday as my second assignment for prose. I did it on Richard Laymon since he’s been my favourite author for years and no one in my class has ever read any of his stories. I’m hoping that will change now. One of our teachers has already bought a book. It also went a lot better than I thought it would.
  • Proposal – I (finally) sent in the proposal for my Independent Study Module. Surprisingly, I’m not worried about whether I’ve done it well. I’m just waiting for a response now.

Next Month:

  • Assignments – I have 4 assignments to give in in just under 2 weeks. So far they’re going pretty well, I have second drafts for my short story and script and basic 1st drafts for my two essays. I’ve also figured out how I can have them all finished on time without having to overwork myself, provided I stay motivated and do everything I have planned for each day.
  • Going Home – I’m going back home on the 13th of December and I can’t wait! It’s going to be so good to be back again and it will be nice to relax without having any work to worry about.
  • Birthday and Christmas – It’s my birthday on the 24th and then Christmas the next day obviously! Unfortunately I only had money this year to buy a present for one person and I chose my dad. I don’t think I’ll be getting many presents either as no one has much money at the moment but I don’t care about that. I’ll just be happy to be with my family and be able to eat properly.
  • Independent Study – Did I say no work? Well maybe a little. The Independent Study module has taken a while to get going so I’ll be working over the holiday to make up for it. Luckily though this one doesn’t require much work and the work it does require I’ll love. All I’ll have to do is a bit of research and some planning that can be completed in January. I’m hoping to have my first draft complete near the end of January or early February.

Cosplay May 2013 Begins

Expo has been over for a month now and as such many people have already started planning for May. I won’t have the money to properly start for a while (not before February at least) but I can still plan. My plans for the moment are as follows:
Ulquiorra – Bleach (chibi/release form)
Silica – Sword Art Online
And 1 other.

The third was originally supposed to be Yumichika from Bleach as part of a group but now they may be doing other things and if so I’ll probably be joining them too. I know I could still do Yumichika but it just sounded better to me as a group, although I still plan on being him at some point regardless because I get into character way too easily.

So anyway it sounds like the alternate cosplay option is going to be from Naurto again so I may end up doing Deidara again (and improved) or I may do another, I haven’t decided yet. I need to check what’s actually happening first.

So I’m currently in the process of how I’m going to be doing each costume. I’ll be giving another cosplay update soon with the plans I have for each. Again, I’m making everything myself this year so this should be fun.

Wednesday 28 November 2012

What did I used to do? And apparently, how I do presentations.

Have you ever been really busy for a while then when you have time to yourself you have no idea what to do?

That’s me today.

So one of the unfortunate things about being a creative writing student is having to give an essay that’s 20% of your module grade.

That doesn’t sound so bad right? That’s probably what you’re thinking if you’re a normal person.
I am in some ways a normal person. I eat, I sleep, I poop. There are also many ways in which I am not ‘normal’. As such, I do not have this response.

Let me put it as a sum:
Me + Presentation = Bad news

To expand:
(Autism + Terrible past experiences public speaking) + (Talking in front of massive crowd + Being judged for an important grade) = Stress and panic

It actually went really well, though I kinda screwed up one of the questions afterwards. It was also the first time during university I’ve been late to class. The one day I get times mixed up, and it’s the worst possible day, especially considering I was scheduled to go first. Luckily, the late nerves killed most of the presentation nerves.

I want to take a moment out to talk about the psychology of positioning. Firstly, I never understood why people never want to be first for things like this. I always want to be first. Yes, it can be a little scary, but at least you won’t have to take the risk of following someone who gives a better presentation (or whatever) than you. I also don’t understand why some people thought it was less scary when they were sitting in front of everyone. It depends on the person I’m sure, but I couldn’t even stay sitting while I was doing test runs. Also, psychologically speaking, standing should be better. It (supposedly) puts you in a position of authority to be the only one standing, part of this being because you are then higher than everyone else. That doesn’t work in a lecture theatre. If you’ve seen a lecture theatre, you know why.

Now, let’s talk about how I apparently thing presentations are done. First, I’m pleased that I didn’t mess up many words or sentences. I’m also pleased that I gave the presentation in exactly 5 minutes, the time limit. It’s very dizzying to look at all those people while trying to give a presentation. The light doesn’t help. Of course, it also doesn’t help that you’re supposed to make eye contact with everyone, and when everyone is spread around the room you need to change the direction you’re looking a lot. I’m fairly sure you shouldn’t do it as much as me. I’m sure there was a time when my head stopped moving, I just can’t remember it well. The rest of my body for the most part was a lot more still than it had been in the test run. I’m not sure whether I spoke too fast or not. I’m not completely sure what my voice sounded like. In a lot of the test runs it usually ended up sounding almost emotionless like a computer or speaking in a different accent. I think my voice today was a cross between my normal voice and the computer one. It just can’t be controlled.
I need to go back to my brain laboratory and figure out how the hell I’m gonna do this next time. I’m guessing there will be a next time.

Here’s the part where I get back to the opening topic. Because I knew I had the presentation today I didn’t schedule any work on assignments for myself afterwards so I could just relax. I sat there for a lot longer than I should have trying to figure out what I could do. I tried to remember what I used to do before all the work took over. There was writing, but I felt I needed a little break (yet I’m writing this now). There was gaming, but my batteries were dead. There was reading, but I couldn’t pay attention. I think after something like today your brain just goes out for a while and takes a while to come back.

When that happens, I’ve found, there’s nothing to do but waste time watching crap on youtube and playing whatever stupid no-thought-involved games you can find on google.

If anyone knows how to give the brain a jump start, do let me know. It’s taken it 5 hours to get back to normal.

Luckily the work I have for tomorrow is fairly simple. I’m working on two things, both second drafts, so they should only take a couple of hours each at most. Then there’s anime society.

Just a quick final note – Liverpool is freezing. There are not enough blankets and coats in my room.

Failed NaNoWriMo... Again!

It was looking hopeful for a couple of days but for the second year in a row university work has stopped me from finishing NaNo! I know there are still a couple of days left but I still have work to do and I really don’t think there’s much chance of getting 45000 words done that quickly.

I still consider it a general victory though as I’ve written more this month in terms of stories than I have in a few months. To me that’s a little more important, though I do really wanna win NaNo.
Next year, I don’t care if it is the last and probably hardest uni year, I will be victorious.

I’m still going to try to continue what I’ve been doing though, when I have the time. I think I’ll just ignore the fact that it isn’t NaNo, just as a challenge for myself, see how much I can get written each month. I mean, I really do need to be writing more stories as well as other things so that’s definitely going to continue after November.

NaNoWriMo Problems Over

A couple of days ago I posted about the problems I was having getting anything written for NaNoWriMo this year. So far since then I've written an extra 13,076 bringing my total so far to 14,022. Most of it was written yesterday when I didn't have a class and I decided to focus more on NaNo than assignments (which is not going to happen often) just to attempt to catch up. I still don't have as much as I probably should but it's getting there pretty quickly. And I owe it all to easy plots I barely even have to think about. Today and tomorrow are going to be focused more on getting some uni assignments done but I will be writing a bit for NaNo of course and as Sunday is my work free day (I had to give myself one) I'll be focusing on NaNo then as well. My goal at the moment is to have 25000, the half way point, finished by Sunday. If things continue the way they have been in the last couple of days I imagine it will be an easy goal to reach.

Failing NaNoWriMo

Things aren't looking good for success with NaNoWriMo again this year. The first week was focused on finishing one assignment and I only got 946 words written. The second was focused on another assignment and I didn't manage to write anything else. I'm still determined to win though. I have another assignment due at the end of this month and four for the beginning of December, but as I have more time for them I'm hoping there will be enough time to finish NaNo as well. I plan to start again after class today so hopefully I'll manage to get a good number of words done.

My Halloween 2012

This Halloween was great. I watched some horror films, played some horror games, had a costume. Halloween is always more exciting when you have a costume.
Here’s my costume:

Jeff the Killer! There were so many issues doing the cuts.
I was looking forward to the fact I’d been given permission to go to class in costume, and it was great. I still haven’t decided whether it was extra fun or slightly awkward that I was the only one dressed up.
I’m also a little sad I didn’t see any of my flatmates that day. I thought it would be fun trying to freak them out.
Later I went to Anime Society for their Halloween thing. I was pleased I wasn’t the only non-anime character but no one knew who I was. I thought Jeff was pretty well known. Oh well, different circles I suppose. As I expected, there were a few Joker-themed comments. The Halloween themed anime were great. I didn’t stay to go drinking after because I had no money and was still recovering from the cold I got walking between the hotel and expo. I did walk around with a friend for a little while afterwards and we had some fun conversations. She bought me a bar of chocolate and later gave me one of her own, so at least I still got candy for Halloween!
Next year’s Halloween will be better, I’ll make sure of it. I already have my costume for that planned too.

My Expo - October 2012

It’s now been a couple of weeks since Expo ended. I meant to do tonight’s posts sooner but I’ve been too busy with assignment deadlines. That shouldn’t happen again though as I have a lot more time to finish my others.

(my wigs in the background of this picture seem to be trying to mate)

So, on to the events of Expo. Friday morning saw me having a Star Trek marathon as I hurried to finish my sandal for Sunday’s roleplay. It only took me a little over an hour, a third the time of the first one the previous night. A short while later we finally left for Expo where we spent the first few hours talking with friends, and there was cake! We then went to our hotel. After finally getting to the right hotel (don’t ask) and doing what we had to there, we then spent 2-3 hours trying to find the way back (we later found a shorter way). We arrived and got our wristbands about an hour before it closed. We then had a fun night back at the hotel. We didn’t spend much time outside this expo aside from travelling because it was so cold (I developed a cold after I got home thanks to all that walking, but luckily it didn’t affect me that badly). Also, my friend’s brother tells amazing bed time stories.

Saturday was even more fun. Around midday we went and had our photo-shoot for our Kingdom Hearts roleplay group. I stupidly forgot to use the two props I’d brought. We then hung around with the group for most of the day and later went to see another old friend.

On Sunday a friend and I were cosplaying from Bleach and found a number of other Bleach cosplayers to hang around until our other friends arrived. We proceeded to have yet another fun day with friends. This was also the day I actually got some stuff, despite having almost no money. A number of friends had already bought me snacks (I didn’t ask them to or anything, it was just kindness). One of my friends bought me a Vincent Valentine plushie (she’d already given me a little Grimmjow thingy the previous day, she got two free when she bought two Bleach DVDs the previous day). I also got Bleach lieutenant’s badge (Renji’s one, for my future cosplay). I had half the money (I did have more than that before I lost a pound coin, still have no idea how) and two friends helped pay for the rest. Later that night we had more crazy KH rp  fun.

('But Vincent, that's my pancake.'
'But I'm adorable.'
'...Oh, okay.')

Overall, I think this was my best expo yet and I’m now looking forward to the next one even more. I'm already planning for the next one.

(I have a lot of pics but the ones here are just of me/things because I haven't gotten permission from people to use their pics on my blog yet. Not sure I actually have to ask but it's nice to anyway I think.)

Back To London/Expo!

The time has finally come!

I'll be going back to London in the morning. I have a couple of things I need to do before then. I want to write the third draft of my screen assignment tonight so I at least have that done for Tuesday when it's due. Then I have to pack and do any other things that have to be done, like cleaning up. I hope I'll be able to get to sleep early. I won't be able to make any more posts until Tuesday because I'm not taking my computer. There won't be any point because it's an extra bag to carry but I won't have much time to use it.

So I have to get up at about 4 in the morning and get on the coach around 6:30. Then it's six hours until I get off at London. There won't be much time to rest because I have to go to the shopping centre and buy the last bits I need for my cosplay shoes as well as my snacks for expo. When I get home I'll be finishing making my shoes, which I will hopefully be able to do before bed time. My friend is sleeping over like she usually does before expo but she won't be able to get to my house until about 9 or 10. Hopefully at some point I'll fit in a shower.

Then Friday, we get into costume and get to the hotel, hang around with friends until we can check in, ditch our stuff in the room and go line up. Of course by this time the line should have already started moving (check in time is around the same time as opening time). I don't think we have much planned for this day so it will probably just be walking around with friends as usual.

Saturday we're having the photoshoot for our Kingdom Hearts group. Hopefully that will go well. Then in the evening we're going to Chinatown for dinner. I literally have no spending money for this other than what I already had to pay for snacks and oyster card but the friend who invited me said she'd pay for me and that I don't have to pay her back. I love her.

Again, I don't think we really have anything planned for Sunday so it will be more fun random happenings.

On Monday I think I will have to leave early because I have to get back to my house, get some stuff and then get to the coach station for about 4pm. I don't like having to leave so early but I have class (and a deadline) the next day.

New Plan for NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo begins in a little over a week and thanks to my trip to London, work on an assignment due a week from now and inability to do anything over expo, I have no plan. I like to have a plan for longer stories, especially when there's a time limit. That is why I've decided to go to my back up plan of writing a series of shorter fanfics. It may not be the ideal choice, I had been looking forward to writing a novel this much, but it is still good and at least I can still win NaNo this way. If next year is the same then I may not be able to do an actual novel during November until I leave uni, it seems there's always a lot to do during the month and this year there is a lot more than last year and it is much more important to my degree, so I'm sure no one can blame me for not wanting to put my focus on something else.

On another writing note, a teacher posted this on our class facebook page. Look who I got! Accurate or not, I consider this a great accomplishment.

How the Modern World Killed Libraries

I want to tell you a story, a story that holds a very important message for me. Sometimes, things bother you, but you don’t feel the need to write about it, even when it relates to the most important thing in your life. That is, you don’t feel the need until something inspires you to write about it. As an optimist (or someone who attempts to be one) I suppose it makes sense that this inspiration comes from more positive sources. In this case, it began today when I went to the LRC – Learning Resources Centre, it’s a fancy term for library in colleges and universities throughout England, and maybe internationally, I don’t know – to borrow some books for an assignment I have to write.

Now, let’s turn the clock back several years. To many people, nineteen doesn’t sound like an age to be considered old, but two decades is enough to gain understanding of the way in which the world changes. There’s a word I have come to dislike – renovation. I dislike it because it took away my childhood. When I heard it, it should have been a hint. I grew up in London and still live there when I’m not at university. Around the corner from where I live is a park, Tabard Park to be precise. As a child it was a wonderful place, but they turned it into something horrible. I don’t know what half the stuff they put in there is, only that I’d rather have it back the way it was. And who removes two thirds of the swings when everyone knows that’s the most popular part? Do they want to start fights? But this isn’t about that. This is about a bigger part of my childhood.

Perhaps it was innate to my being or perhaps it was escapism from the real world that was so necessary in a place filled with bullies. You can call me a loser, loner, nerd, whatever they term people like me as now, but ever since I was an infant, it was always books. Reading and writing have been at the top of my hobbies list since before I was able to do either. I would memorise the words in stories my parents read me so I could recall them to myself before the letters were given meaning in my mind. Before my pen could produce more than scribbles I was giving life to characters in my head. This is essentially my entire life, although now new hobbies have come in as well, these two will always hold special significance.

It’s natural for one such as myself that the centre of this obsession would be the local library, after all the books in my collection were read and before I could afford more, what better option was there? John Harvard Library was my local one, and I remember well the way it was. I know in my head and heart the way libraries are supposed to be. My local was of course one of the main influences of this image (though I’m sure the one from Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ got in there too, what book lover wouldn’t want to be Belle in that situation?). Brown isn’t the colour I would usually use for decoration (it would be both horrible and hilarious as the primary colour in a bathroom) but in libraries it is perfect, perhaps because it is the colour we most associate with tree trunks, the source of our books. White and red make good secondary colours in this scheme. The library air is unique, thicker than the outside air, one may get the impression they’d suffocate if they spent too long in there, of course with a good selection they should never want to leave. It is warm. The smell of paper should be prominent. I am one of those people who must sniff every book I obtain before I begin to read. It is strongest in the middle and paperbacks smell better.

These were all features of my local library. They had a massive section of children’s books, though I only spent a few years in there, beginning to read ‘grown up’ books while I was still in primary school. They had a big section for everything, even my favourites: graphic novels, sci-fi, fantasy and horror. They had a bigger horror section than most book shops I’ve been in and that is my number one genre. I would be bringing home piles of books every other week.

Then it happened: renovation. I forgot the previous time it seems because I was convinced the library would become better, and even have a bigger selection of books. Silly child, libraries don’t work like that anymore.

I was so excited the day it reopened. It looked great from the outside. I disliked it as soon as I stepped in. Everything was white. Nothing man-made should ever be all white. It is cold and sterile and inhuman. The air was just like that outside and the smell was not of paper. The counter was replaced by a small help desk, self-service machines its place. I hated self-service machines when they first came out. I love them now but it is still the only part I can accept, and I missed the old ways. I miss watching the stamp and the other item they used, I don’t know what it was called, but I missed the sound.

You know what took up half of the library, don’t you? It was a coffee shop. As if there wasn’t a Starbucks and a Costa and whatever else outside. Do you know what it means for half the library to be taken up by a coffee shop? That’s right, half the books. Every section reduced, some brilliant books removed, many of my favourites gone. I love coffee. Coffee smells good. Coffee tastes good. Coffee is the perfect partner for reading and writing. Coffee does not belong in a library. It isn’t so bad in book shops, but only because they are still so big that it doesn’t impair the function of the shop by reducing half its stock. Even then, it is usually only in big chain book stores like Waterstones. I love Waterstones, but there’s something about those little book stores you find on street corners that is a completely different kind of special. Of course, everything’s Amazon now isn’t it? It’s cheaper and you don’t even have to leave the house. What an age we live in. Everything can be done without having to communicate with people.

Back to the topic, no, I don’t believe that is what makes a library. I haven’t been back in a few years. There was no point; there was almost nothing I wanted to read. Maybe they’ve had some new stock since then. Maybe I’ll take a look at some point.

So we come back to the present, and I mentioned at the beginning of this post that I went to the library at my university today. They don’t have a coffee shop. They have the colours, and smells, and air I remembered. I walked in and it was so hot I felt instantly dehydrated, my legs were weak. That shouldn’t sound like a good thing but as I looked through the shelves upon shelves of books, which they have three floors of by the way, I was reminded of the way my old library used to be, of the way libraries should be. Of course, being an educational place, it wasn’t separated in genres such as ‘horror’ or ‘fantasy’ though I did manage to find a bit of both, but that’s really beside the point. This is the way libraries should be, this is what gave me hope again. I fear that soon too many will be like the one I used to go to. There’s a lot of modern architecture and interior design I hate to be honest, more things need to look the way they did in the previous centuries. I know there’s the whole thing about how mankind and society needs to evolve and move on but seriously? They redid my old school recently too and the result was pretty much the same. If everything’s going to end up that way can someone hurry up and build me a time machine please?

I may be called a hypocrite because I love my technology. I love my laptop, my video games, my music, but there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed. Like technology wise, I’m not a fan of everything being downloadable. I hate it. I want my music in CDs (yes I have an iPod but still, everything on it is from discs), my films on DVDs (though I do have fond memories of VHS) and my books in books, not on a screen. Yes, there are some great stories online that aren’t available in paper copies, but those that are should be kept there. I know that’s not quite keeping with the library topic of this post but I thought it was a relevant note to add.

So I want to know what other people think of this. I know I see some things differently from ‘normal people’ by I can’t be the only one who sees these modern libraries as atrocities. It completely changes the experience of reading and I don’t think it does so for the better, and of course experience is key to inspiration.

I Made a Sandal! - Cosplay Update

It is 10 days before Expo. Nearly a week.
Let's see how far I've come:

Deidara
  • All clothes sorted, if slightly inaccurate. But I don't plan to take my coat off so that's fine.
  • It's been 3 weeks since I ordered my wig and it hasn't even been sent yet. I've accepted I won't have it in time and as I'm low on money have decided to do it with my own hair without dying it (I really don't want to dye it). Again, inaccurate, but better than nothing.
  • Still need to make the shoes and figure out how to do my hands.
  • Bought some weapons from Tokyo Toys.

Zexion
  • A friend has said I may be able to borrow his book.
  • Still need to find some cheap black boots somewhere.

Jushiro
  • All clothes sorted. Wig has arrived and is perfect.
  • Started making my sandals. The firt came out good but not great. I know what went wrong though and I think I can fix it without taking the whole thing apart. The second will be done the Thursday before expo. I'm sure I'll have them done in time.

(The sandal so far.)

I did have a plan for NaNoWriMo...

I am still determined to win NaNo this year. A week ago I was trying hard to find a plot. I thought of one that had potential but somehow it turned itself into a sequel to the novel I planned last year. The problem is, I want to write that novel first, but not for NaNo, so that plot is out.

I have just over two weeks to come up with and plan out a new idea. I have a few so I just need to develop one enough to have a novel. I don’t think it will be anything I try to get published, more just to put online and prove to myself that I can still write novel length stories. I may even do a fanfic, I have a few of those planned too.

Planned Cosplays

Yesterday a friend came over so we could work on our cosplays together. We got really excited and started planning future cosplays, since most of ours are done together. Weekly Update 14/10/12

This week:
  • Spent Thursday to Monday afternoon in London. It felt great to be back. The air really feels different to Liverpool, it feels more like home and that’s probably because it is. It was great seeing my friends and family and cat again and I had a lot of fun.
  • Went out on Friday to get some supplies for zombie day and my sandals. The guys in the rope shop played a mean joke on me but I love the place anyway.
  • Went to Zombie Day. I’ve already done a post about that so I won’t go into detail here.
  • Worked on cosplays. Again, I’ll do a post for that tomorrow.

Next Week:
  • Finish draft of screenwriting assignment and start work on prose assignment.
  • Try to fix first sandal.
  • Plan my NaNoWriMo novel.

World Zombie Day

So yesterday was World Zombie Day, the time of year zombies swarm the treets in search of yummy human flesh. The day where, if real zombies were to arise, no one would even realise until it was too late.

So for anyone reading this who may not know, this is the day that people dress as zombies, for charity! It's actually a pub crawl but I was too poor for the drinking part this year. Luckily, the drink isn't necessary to have fun. So as the name says, it happens all over the world. I was at the one in London.

This was zombie me. Very far from the great looking zombies that were there. I was better than it show in the picture. I had an old t-shirt that was already covered in rips and added some fake blood (it showed off quite a bit of side boob and stomach) and had bloody scratch marks on my skin where the largest rip was. I got a pair of jeans that I don't wear anymore anyway because the zip broke and added some rips and blood. My hoodie got the blood on it just from the way I was touching it after covering my hands in blood. I had a lot of blood on my arms, face and neck. I tried to mess up my hair and use make up to make my skin more pale but both seemed to fail. I also had dark circles around my eye. And someone gave me a plastic thumb!
I will be a much better looking zombie next year. I'm already thinking about ideas.

The day itself was a lot of fun. It started by meeting up with a couple of friends and then going to the meet point for the zombies. A friend and I spent the first hour or so growling at normal people and chasing little children (I did immediately leave the ones that seemed scared, I'm not evil). We also had lots of funny moments with other zombies and zombie hunters.

We then started moving through the city and at one stop met up with some other friends and had a great time standing/sitting around talking and surrounded by zombies. It was also the meet for our KH RP group.

I had to leave earlier than my friends because I had some stuff I had to do at home but it was a really great day. Again, I'm looking forward to next year.
